DFM: First Catfish Fishing Experience

Filed under: The Daily Flash Minnow — admin @ 7:21 pm July 31, 2013

This week I’ve gone Catfish fishing for the very first time at a state park. The procedure is quite simple – a friend of mine had garlic marinated Mackerels as its bait the night before and we started early in the morning at 6am to cast the hooked bait in the center of the pond. Then we just waited until we got a bite. While we waited for the Catfish to bite and there were most likely Bass in the pond, we decided to aim for some Bass that are in the shore area. I lowered my position and quietly as possible, I cast to my target! Then it must of been beginners luck! With Mr. Shibata’s (aka Taicho) bait, the Blade Cross 110 (TRG), I caught a small size Bass! And as Taicho explained the Bass was firmly hooked on the center hook and the rear hook on its gill. Then riding ended there!! My friend caught a Bass as well! As for the Catfish, we caught 2 this day! I got to experience pulling in the Catfish and it was a different sense of heavy pull than a Bass or Halibut. Next, I would like to challenge on night Catfish fishing!

DFM: Lake Perris

Filed under: Bass Fishing,The Daily Flash Minnow — admin @ 4:38 pm April 10, 2013

This week I went Bass fishing at Lake Perris, CA with Kyle from Anglers Marine. We started fishing at 6 in the morning. Amazingly, Kyle’s very first catch with the RTO 1.5 (Color: Pearl Threadfin Shad) was a 9 pound Bass!! However, thick fogs surrounded us and I wasn’t able to film in the beginning but I started filming after the sun came up so please stay tuned for it!

As for me, I continued to fish with some crankbaits for about 2 hours starting 7am including our new LV 500 Spin (vibration) which will be released this year, but got no bites! I decided to change locations assuming the Bass will go into areas with reeds. I used the pitching technique and was able to catch 2 Bass with the Wacky rig. I finally crossed my highest number of Bass caught in a day!

Then Kyle did it again. This time it wasn’t with a hardbait, but with a Texas rig & caught a 7-8 pound Bass!!

I usually only use hard baits for Bass fishing and it was actually my first time learning how to fish with warms. From now on I would like to try my best in properly using both hard and soft baits depending on the condition. And my goal this year is to catch some good size Bass!

The week after next, I will be heading to Vail Lake which is currently in the greatest condition! I heard they are catching over 70 in one day! Please stay tuned!!

DFM: H-1 Champion Mr. Toru Sasaki – USA Fishing Tour Final Day

Filed under: Bass Fishing,The Daily Flash Minnow — admin @ 6:56 pm December 12, 2012

It is the final day of Mr. Sasaki’s US Bass fishing tour.
We went to the perfect place for his last day here – Lake Vail which is known to be a Bass fishing paradise. We also came here with last year’s H-1 winner, Mr. Ito as well.

On this day we had Mr. Art Hill to be our guide. He is a very popular & professional fishing guide in this area. The weather was perfectly sunny and surprisingly there were already 9 boats out by the time we got there. Usually on a regular weekday there would only be about 2 boats out around this time…

First thing Mr. Sasaki did was he threw in a Crankbait but lost his fish! Since it wasn’t quite a good start, he was concerned & mentioned, “That loss might affect me later…” However, soon after he caught his very first Bass of the day with the LV-RTO 150! He’s finally starting to performed like he did in the H-1 tournaments!

We then changed locations and started fishing with vibrating Crankbaits. After fully enjoying that, we decided to move to another location to aim at a deeper range where they have 2 bumps. A lot of 5 pound class Bass may be located in this area. Many would bite on Drop Shots & Jigs, but unfortunately they were all small size Bass… So we changed locations again.

On our way to the next destination we found a spot with a lot of baitfish so we did drop shot fishing there and got some catches. For about an hour, Mr. Sasaki himself handled the ship and continued to fish with hard baits. But couldn’t get any catches… We only had an hour left to fish and we decided to go back to the area with 2 bumps where we caught the most fish with better possibility of catching a big one. As we hoped, Mr. Sasaki caught the biggest Bass of the day with a Crankbait! He was extremely happy & was able to end his US fishing trip with great satisfaction!

I wonder who will be the next Angler Of the Year? We definitely can’t keep our eyes off the 2013 H-1 GPX tournament next year!

I hope I get to see the actual competition on site next year! It’ll be nice if I could hand over the ticket to the AOY winner at his last round.

DFM: H-1 Champion Mr. Toru Sasaki – USA Fishing Tour Day 2

Filed under: Bass Fishing,The Daily Flash Minnow — admin @ 6:58 pm December 7, 2012

It’s finally time for Mr. Sasaki’s first time Bass fishing in the United States! And of course his guide is the famous pro angler, Brent Ehrler at Lake Perris. Last year Brent guided the previous H-1 champion in Diamond Valley Lake, but due to prior fishing information, we decided to go to Lake Perris which is also Brent’s home lake.

Recently in Los Angeles, it’s been raining for 3 days which is very unusual here. And our fishing day started in a rainy weather condition so Brent predicted it would be some deep range fishing.

The very first bite in the early morning was made by Brent with a jig. Afterwards, Mr. Sasaki caught his very first Bass (in the US) with a down shot and of course we took a snap at that! At around noon, the rain had stopped and as we moved to different locations we threw in some Crankbaits but got absolutely no bites. Using the winning lure “Big Bud” had to be carried over to the next day. From the beginning to the end, Mr. Sasaki expanded his slow fishing method with a down shot and ended the day catching 4 Bass!

Also as a Basser magazine editor, he didn’t forget to take some photos of his own for an article.

In addition to Bass, we also caught a Blue Gill! How rare is that!

DFM: H-1 Champion Mr. Toru Sasaki – USA Fishing Tour Day 1

Filed under: The Daily Flash Minnow — admin @ 6:50 pm December 3, 2012

Today, the 2012 H-1 GPX Tournament champion – Mr. Sasaki who is also an editor at Basser Magazine has finally arrived for some US fishing tour! He is staying here for only 3 days so we squeezed a lot of exciting projects full of surprises! We’ll even be sacrificing some sleep time, but all the fishing will be well worth it!

Immediately after Mr. Sasaki arrived at LAX airport, we went straight to the Bass Pro Shop which was about an hour drive.

As we expected, he was very surprised by how big the place was and ended up buying a lot of fishing tools (the total amount spent is a secret!). After that we went to the Lucky Craft USA office and showed him around our warehouse. Then came our exciting surprise for him! Pro angler Takahiro Omori showed up to meet with Mr. Sasaki!!

After getting acquainted, we went to the famous OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE for dinner! Mr. Sasaki had the 20oz porterhouse steak and ate the entire thing quick! (he even said since there was no rice with it he could probably eat another one!) We were amazed by his appetite.

Tomorrow we’re going Bass fishing early in the morning. There are some signs of rain, but a pretty well condition can be expected so please stay tuned for that!

DFM: Japan Expedition! Part 2

Filed under: Bass Fishing,The Daily Flash Minnow — admin @ 5:18 pm November 27, 2012

Continuing from my last post, I want to share a little more about my trip to Japan. Some of you already might know about the H-1 Grand Prix tournament held by Lucky Craft, and we were fortunate enough to be able to sponsor it again for the second time this year! All 5 competitions were held in the Kanto region and the 2012 H-1 GPX champion/AOY was earned by Mr. Sasaki who is also an editor of Basser Magazine. On the other hand, last year’s champion – Mr. Ito from Marukyu Co. was devastated from being so close to winning the tournament again landing in 2nd place. I actually went to Tonegawa with Mr. Ito on this trip to capture some good fishing spots and also comments on how the 5 intense competitions went. This film will soon be viewed on Enjoy DVD so please stay tuned!

As for fishing in Tonegawa, Mr. Ito amazingly caught 2 in the morning. I originally wanted to film some hard bait fishing as an H-1 extra edition clip – so I had Mr. Ito throw in some hard baits, but due to the condition he had to switch it to a Texas Rig & Neko Rig. Then he caught 2 with that. Afterwards Mr. Ito kindly gave me a – as he will call it -“Texas Training Session” and my Bass fishing skills definitely got better!

Next week 2012 H-1 GPX winner, Mr. Sasaki will be visiting the United States and hope he will enjoy and learn a lot about fishing here. So please stay tuned for that as well!

DFM: Japan Expedition! Part 1

Filed under: Bass Fishing,The Daily Flash Minnow — admin @ 5:55 pm November 15, 2012

I actually went to Osaka & Kanto region in Japan this time around to go on a fishing training expedition. On my very first fishing lesson, I had gone to Aono dam in Hougo prefecture with Mr. Fukuda from Fivecore. And I got to use their original rods from Fivecore as well. I used the same rod Lucky Craft pro staff Mr. Suzuki Mitsuo uses as one of his favorite – the Finesse Flip Rod (He won the TBC Classic tournament with this rod). I decided to use a smaller type lures such as the Clutch DR, Bevy Crank MR and some testing with the new BS 65FC.Since it rained the previous day, the water temperature decreased quite a bit and so instead of doing the shad pattern, using a small scale crankbait was more effective and got more bites. I used both silent and rattle depending on the condition: towards the beginning I used the silent lure and got a few bites, but as the time passed I noticed the Bass would show more interest in the rattle. I personally caught 1 on the silent Clutch DR and that was my very first Bass caught in Japan!

Also, as someone who goes power fishing in America a lot, there was an extremely surprising fact on this amazing rod Japanese people created using their high technical strength. You can cast this Finesse Flip Rod using only one arm!! Believe it or not, my arm doesn’t even get tired and I could use this rod all day long! If anyone is interested, please go to the link below for further information.

I’m definitely getting one for myself!

This fishing day was filmed and will be posted very soon! So please stay tuned!
