DFM: Long Beach Jetty
7/21/2012
After the grunion run, Raney and I (Peter) decided to head out to Long Beach jetty to fish for halibut. We got there at greylight right before peak low tide. Tried the front area with the LC Flash Minnow 110 Glow in the Dark Sardine while Raney tried the Flash Pointer Green Sexy Smelt. I missed a couple of hits so we moved on down the jetty towards the middle where it was a little deeper. There was a lot of bird activity diving at bait everywhere and we thought this was a definitely good sign to come. I finally hooked up to a small 12 inch halibut while Raney was still trying for his first. We moved on to deeper waters so I decided to tie on the LC Pointer 100 in fresh water color and picked up a yellowfin croaker about 13-14 inches. Put up a good little fight and I was using a slow, steady retrieve for this fish. I tied on a LC Flash Minnow 120DD (Deep Diver) and Raney put on a LC Pointer 100 in mackeral color. The bite picked up for me because I think I was in the right strike zone with the LC FM DD and I caught a healthy 18 inch halibut. Then I picked up 2 Legal Halibuts! One 24 inches and the other 22 1/2 inches. The retrieve on the deep diver was a fast pace retrieve. The picture shows how excited I was because this was the first time I’ve caught a legal halibut here and not only one, but two! Raney used my lure for a couple of minutes and picked up a baby halibut about 6 inches but at least he got the skunk off.
