DFM: Halibut

Filed under: Salt Water Fishing,The Daily Flash Minnow — admin @ 6:21 pm

I again went to Bolsa Chica for Halibut fishing. My fishing partner this time is Miku who started Halibut fishing just last year and have already caught a 26in Halibut! I suppose it’s been almost a year since she last went fishing. Although I must say, she has some type of strong fishing luck… There were others around us bait fishing who couldn’t catch anything for awhile, but while then she caught 2!! …She wasn’t able to catch a 26in Halibut, but she did catch a small Ray and a Halibut (not a legal size).

The lure she chose to use was the Pointer 100 in Ghost Green Smelt. We went on a Saturday so there were quite a few people (about 15 fishermen) and if you can’t cast & retrieve that well it tends to get tangled up with the person next to you. So to avoid such trouble, we decided to leave a little early before 9.

DFM: Yes! Legal Size Halibut!

Filed under: The Daily Flash Minnow — admin @ 6:41 pm

I FINALLY caught my very first legal size Halibut (22in)! I caught it at Bolsa Chica! On this day, I was fishing when it was low tide so I wasn’t expecting to catch anything big. However, my fishing partners whom I came with all caught 1 each. In my case, on my first cast of the day, I hit the bottom to examine the area (Imagining all the small fish prey on the plankton of the ocean floor) and retrieved at a standard speed. The lure was almost near my foot so I started to retrieve faster to bring it up towards me. Then all of a sudden, I saw a Halibut jumping out trying to bite my lure! I immediately cast towards that area (slightly further) with the Staysee 90. This time I retrieved slowly and at the same spot where the Halibut jump out earlier, it started to chase after my lure and I got a bite!! From the look of the bent of our new ESG rod I was using, I guessed it would be at least 20in big. I carefully pulled it up to the shore and surely it was a pretty good size Halibut! With the help of my fishing partners, I was able to capture it this time. It was my very first Halibut this year and my very first legal size too!

Wow~ it took me 2 years to catch a legal size Halibut! My next goal is to catch a 25in and above Halibut!!

On this fishing trip, I used our Lucky Craft USA new product “BIGUP” Saltwater colors (Sardine colors) and I also caught some with our Saltwater lure king “Flash Minnow 110”.

We shot another great Smallmouth Bass Show for Stihls Reel in the Outdoors on Lake St. Claire near Detroit. Michigan. I hooked up with my good friend and St. Claire guide Gerry Gostinek of Great Lakes Bass Guides. The fish are coming off the spawning beds early and were already out in 12 feet of water.

DFM Tester: San Onofre

6/2/12

On Saturday June 9,2012 Peter and I decided to fish at San Onofre State Beach. Reports from this area from the past few weeks have shown that people were catching nice sized halibut and white seabass. We both decided to throw the Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110SP, Peter’s color choice was Sexy Geisha Queen Sardine and I went with Ghost White Sea Bass. I caught my first fish on the incoming tide, this fish hit the lure almost as soon as it hit the water! I bring it closer to shore and I thought that it might be a juvenile white sea bass. But after beaching the fish we identified it to be a good sized Yellowfin Croaker at 16 inches! Soon after peak high tide Peter hooks up on his first halibut from the surf! This fish was caught using a steady medium retrieve. We measured it at 20 inches, just 2 inches short of legal. No matter though because Peter was really excited about his catch. Be careful fishing this spot because there is alot rocks to get stuck on. I would suggest fishing high abrasion resistant line like 15# mono, 30# spectra, or bigger. Until next time folks, tight lines!
