Daily Flash Minnow! I had gone fishing before the end of 2010.

I mainly used the new lure I brought back from Japan, which is also a “product still unscheduled to arrive in America”. I got my tackles ready to aim for some Hirame (Flounder). Once I arrived at my fishing location, it was actually a sunny day. However, the wind was blowing very strongly creating a choppy sea with cloudy water surface. When water becomes cloudy, instead of using natural colors, it is better to use colors like Gold which is more noticeable. “Although this is just a theory…”

I first moved along the embankment and started to cast with the lure I used at Tokyo Bay where caught a lot of fish: the Valid. Normally I would be able to make a long cast, but on this day the wind was blowing towards me very hard so the lure wasn’t able to go far. Since it didn’t reach far enough, I had to move to the shore side and started to fish there instead. Here, the wind wasn’t blowing towards me and blew side ways so the wind took the lure away and I was able to perform a long cast.  It traveled back and forth for about 300m along the shore. In a pretty fast pace, I continued to change the lure color to Gold, White, and Metallic and even changed the lure model from top to deep. But unfortunately I had to end my last fishing trip this year with “no fish”.

This time I didn’t use the Flash Minnow at all and wanted to fish with just the new lures. The result wasn’t so great today…

But I definitely want to prove that I can catch some fish using other lures besides the Flash Minnow by next year! And this will be my new project for next year!

I will like to introduce the lures used on this day:

This new SKT isn’t just a size upgrade, but it’s a completely new bait. Serious fisherman will need both in their tackle box because they stand out in very different conditions.

The Daily Flash Minnow! After coming back from Japan, I again had the opportunity to go fishing with Brent. California has been in a rainy season and for a place where it doesn’t rain that often, there has been major traffic congestions and makes me feel very blue! But it is a perfect condition for Bass fishing!! They might be less cautious! And…I should be able to catch some…… so I thought.
Last time when I went fishing with Brent, it was in September and we had a lot of fun fishing with soft top water lures. This time we used the new LLPT 105S!!
I decided to use the new “Smasher” lure designed by the yellow emperor! – Skeet Reese. After arriving at the lake, we head to our fishing spot! Then we found a bunch of boils. I cast towards it and kept trying but wasn’t able to get any bites. The boils went away after that. While the boat was moving to another destination, Brent had caught and pretty big Bass! This Bass was caught the same way as last time with the straight top worm about 4in long in color white.
I kept casting thinking I got to do well like Brent, but wasn’t able to even get a bite… Then all of a sudden a boil appeared!! It was my 3rd chance that day!
We all made a cast at the same time and the first bite was on mine!!!! Unfortunately… the line broke…
Afterwards Brent and another fisherman on the same boat got a bite at the same exact time!!! It was Stripers. He had caught it with the new “Smasher”!
Here is a useful fishing knowledge from Brent: “Where there are a lot of birds, there are fishes!”
Everyone was excited from the catch and I was the only one left who had no catches! I was in a crisis! There was only 1 hour left to fish and then I found another boil!
I immediately cast with tenacity and finally got a bite… I caught a Striper with the new lure!
In this fishing trip there were many Stripers caught and everyone seem to have a lot of fun. The new lure performed very well and was able to have a great report on it for next year’s release.

See you soon!

Skeet’s Beat – SRI #16 12-20-2010
I went on a forced diet this week. The first couple of days of the week were spent battling Montezuma’s Revenge, and I lost about four pounds in two days. Not a diet that I’d recommend.
After recovering, I spent a full day trying to get an hour and a half of footage for one of my sponsors on the water.

Ranger Trip and Bassmaster U

Since my last blog I feel like I’ve had a couple cool trips. First I headed back to Flippin’ Arkansas home of the best bass boat builder in the world – Ranger. I was there for their annual sales tour of the plant. It’s a neat tour where you literally can walk right up and watch the guys build these amazing boats. The whole process is unbelievable and it definitely makes me feel great knowing I am riding in such a well built boat. I can’t wait for my new Z-521 to arrive at Angler’s Marine in Anaheim right after X-Mas, I think santa’s bringing it to me in his sleigh!

Next I head off to Chicago to speak at the Bassmaster University. There’s a couple things I can tell you about Chicago after this trip: One, its really cold there and two the anglers there know their stuff. I couldn’t get over how educated the questions they were asking me. When I think of the sport of bass fishing Chicago is the last place that I would think would have such an intelligent group of anglers. Really, some of their questions really got me to thinking. I really enjoy doing these Bassmaster University sessions and speaking with the grass roots anglers, it keeps the fundamentals in the forefront of my mind and its always a great time talking fishing with fellow anglers.

Well, Christmas is right around the corner and I am enjoying some time with the family. Its nice to just lay low and get prepared for the long season. As I mentioned the boat arrives next week and starting then I will be prepping it and getting ready to go. I have high hopes for this season and I am looking forward to it. I wish all you anglers out there, and your families, an awesome Christmas and I hope you all get to spend some quality time with the people most important to you.

Family Getaway

We wrapped the final episode for the next season of Ultimate Match Fishing a couple weeks ago and I am finally home for a bit. This year I spent 260 days on the road between the filming of Ultimate Match Fishing and Stihl’s Reel in the Outdoors and fishing the FLW Tour so some family time was much needed.

My wife, three kids and I headed up into the Smokey Mountains for a family get away. It was great to have some time quality time together. We stayed at a great little cabin pretty far away from everything and just made trips into town to catch some shows. We did find time to hit the slopes for some tubing and skiing with the kids.

I am happy to announce we just signed a 2 year extension for Stihl’s Reel in the Outdoors with the Outdoor Channel. I am excited about that and I am already making plans for the first big filming for next season in January. I am headed to Okeechobee to do some fishing with Tom Mann Jr. on his home water. January fishing in Okeechobee can be fantastic, a few years ago I had a top 10 finish using a Lucky Craft Pointer 112 in the canals. I know they also eat the Lucky Craft Gunfish in January there too, there is nothing like topwater fishing in January. I know Tom likes to throw the buzz-frog this time of year as well so it should make for a great show with some explosive topwater bites. From there I will be making plans for 12 additional new shows on some of the best bass fishing lakes in the U.S. and Mexico, the new shows will begin to air in July of 2011.

I am also very excited that I will continue my relationship with Ranger Boats and Evinrude for the next year and I am looking forward to riding in the best boat & motor package available on the market today. I’ll be in that boat more than I’ll be home, so its nice to know I have a great ride and a reliable motor for the filming of the shows and fishing the FLW Tour for 2011.

Another thing we just wrapped up is a video that my production company just put together for Lucky Craft. We headed out and met up with Rick Clunn and Rick educated us (and you via the video) on the RC series of Crankbaits that he has designed with Lucky Craft for Bass Pro Shops. Rick takes us from the concept, through the design and into the fishing of the baits. He doesn’t leave out any details, the insight and thought that went into the design of these baits is remarkable. If you watch this video you better make sure you either have some RC baits in the box or a BPS store nearby because you are going to be pumped about tying one on. Rick is a true legend in our sport and his attention to detail and knowledge of fishing is in each bait and the video will definitely teach everyone something about all baits, fishing and everything in between. As of now, we are not sure where it will be released but, in my next blog I’ll let you know where you can find it.

To wrap up the blog I’d just like to wish everyone out there a great holiday season and I look forward to meeting many of you on the water and at the tradeshows.

Season in Jeopardy

A few years ago I had a problem with my little finger on my left hand. Back then I went to New York to see a doctor and they gave me a cortisone shot that has helped for a few years. Lately, the pain has increased and moved up my hand and into my wrist and has made it nearly impossible for me to fish. I don’t have any other fishing related injuries and have never had anything like this before. With a little more than six weeks until my first scheduled tournament I am headed to the Orthopedic doctor today to see what the problem is and what can be done.

It is tough for me to even think about fishing right now but, I’m still preparing for the season as though I am going to fish. Last week I went to Toledo Bend and just drove around the lake looking at the hydrilla, ditches, points and other stuff because the water is down. Other than checking out a few lakes by just driving around and looking at them I haven’t been able to do too much. I haven’t been able to actually fish but, I am hoping I will be ready for the season but, at this point I just don’t know.

Usually this time of year I head back to Japan to visit my family, but this year I decided not to. I am focused on getting my left hand healed enough so that I can fish this season.

I wish I had better news right now but, it is really up to the doctors and my wrist healing quite a bit before I will be able to continue to fish. I am not sure if changing the way I fish is an option but, it may come to that. Making thousands of casts a day is simply too much for my hand and wrist to handle right now and unless the doctors figure out the injury and a solution for it my season is in jeopardy. Six weeks isn’t very long I just hope by the time the season gets here I will be ready to go.

Injury is a part of all sports and I am excited to put this injury behind me and get back to doing what I love to do, catch fish! I will report back with my blog with any progress in the near future.

A Christmas Gift

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:15 pm

Today a wonderful Christmas gift or in Japan, it would be called a year-end gift, was delivered to me from Skeet Reese. It was a live lobster! I was very surprised!! It’s very fresh!! I immediately grilled it in the corner of our warehouse and ate it. The lobster was so tender and delicious. It is such a great season. Thank you very much Skeet Reese!!
