A Family Week

Filed under: Bass Fishing — admin @ 4:54 am

It was a busy week around the Reese house, but, gratefully, most of it revolved around Kim and the girls.

We had a little tree trimming done around the yard, and we also had the driveways seal coated, and the crew finished just in time as we got our first rain here in I don’t know how long. The rain was needed, but we were a little nervous it was going to spoil some fun…

Kelly Jordan Blog 10/11/10

I just jumped off the bulldozer here at my father in law’s tree farm here in Texas. Man there is something about the power in those machines that is makes them fun to drive. I’ve been clearing some paths and getting the land ready for some hunting. It’s my local hunting grounds. For trophy hunts I’ll head to south Texas.

On the fishing front, I just got back from the PAA’s Texas Bass Classic where I am disappointed in my finish. After day one I had a seven pound lead but, the fishing changed and I didn’t adapt with it and I ended up in 9th. On that first day I was able to boat over 26 pounds of fish on the Lucky Craft D-20 in Crack color. I had a 6.5 lber, a 6 lber and a 5.75 lber and I lost one bigger than that. Catching fish like that on day 1 sure makes it tough to change up for days 2 and 3.

One neat thing about this event was that it is a zero impact tournament. What that means is, we had an official in the boat with us and when we caught a fish we weighed it right there on the water and then released it. I really think more tournaments ought to be like that.

The day before the event, the PAA hosts a Pro-Am event with the sponsors of the event riding along and fishing from our boats. I was lucky enough to draw a couple of friends Chris Mahfouz and Jay Gulley for the day. Chris landed an 8 pound 12 ounce giant that was good enough to win Chris big fish and help us take the win.

My next event is in early November and it’s the Fish –n- Chips fishing and poker tournament in Oklahoma on Grand Lake hosted by Mark Jefferies of BassZone.com. It’s a great event where all of us who compete against each other week after week can go and fish with a little less at stake. The pressure is off so we can all loosen up, have some fun and talk some trash.

Business as Usual

I just got back from a week of business trips with two of my sponsors.

I spent three days in Spirit Lake, Iowa, with Berkley and two days in Denver, Colo. with Wright & McGill Co. The purpose of the trip was to work on future projects and refine some of the existing projects we have going.

I always enjoy these meetings because I get to exercise all of my “fishing industry skills.” When I am working on products, I get to put all of my years of fishing experience into play, but I also get to stretch my marketing skills as well…

On the road home from the Toyota Texas Bass Classic

Brent Ehler Lucky Craft Blog

I’ve just finished fishing the PAA Toyota Bass Classic on Lake Conroe in Texas. It was a great experience and I think I learned quite a bit at this event. The PAA did a really good job with the tournament which started off with a pro am and then concluded with a two day event and a final third day with the top 10 anglers.

The pro am event was a pretty neat deal. The PAA invited their sponsors to be co-anglers with the pros for a day on the water. I was lucky enough to get to fish with a couple of guys from Oakley (sunglasses) during the pro am. I’ve been working with Oakley for a couple years and to get a few of their people out on the water with me made for a fun day on the water. We had a blast fishing and telling stories all day. It was basically a pre-fish day for me and I was able to find a few spots that would help out during the tournament.

As for the tournament itself, I am not satisfied with my performance. Things got started out pretty rough because in the weeks leading up to it I was very busy with the FLW Cup on Lake Lanier, the BASS Northern open event and the final FLW Western Series event on Lake Roosevelt. With those events on my mind I really didn’t think to much about the Toyota Texas Bass Classic and by the time I started to think about it I missed the pre-practice period and could not pre-fish or obtain any information on the lake from others. This was a big mistake and really hurt my chances.

Arriving at Lake Conroe I had a plan to pre-fish deep for an hour and then go shallow for an hour until I started to find a pattern. After three of four switches (from deep to shallow and back) I started to see that I would get bit shallow and there wasn’t much happening deep. So after the first day, I moved my entire focus to the docks on the bank. Fishing a Lucky Craft RC 2 I focused on sea-walls and docks. I really liked the RC 2 over the RC 1.5, probably the best shallow crankbait for any lake, because the extra weight helped me to to make precision casts in small pockets around docks. I wrapped the tournament up in 30th place which is not what I had hoped for but, I did learn a lot.

This week I am heading to the National Guard FLW Collegiate regionals at Folsom Lake in Northern California. What a great deal for these young men and women to have an opportunity like this to start a fishing career or simply to enjoy this great sport while they get their education. I am really looking forward to meeting and talking with a lot of these young anglers and offering my support to them, the National Guard and FLW.

A Bunch Going On

This has been a good week; productive with a little bit of fun thrown in too.

I worked out most of the week, as I always do in the offseason. I’m trying to get in as good as shape as possible with the season getting closer and closer. When I’m in shape, I think better, and have better stamina to go as hard as I need to all day…
