DFM Video Day 2

August 30th, 2012

We get up early in the morning and our first stop for the day (August 18th) is the Bolsa Chica Inlet. This day was my second time there and Peter’s first time there. On arrival we clearly see that the tide is really low, we got there at about 6:30am and high tide wouldn’t be until 10:30am. With the tide being as low as it was I decided to throw the new Blade Cross Bait 110 and Peter would use the FM130MR. I decided to throw the Blade Cross because it is a slow sinking lure and would allow my bait to stay in the topwater column. We were both having a difficult time fishing here because the current was pulling really strong to the right so we all decided to fish more calm water. We all agreed that the Santa Ana River Jetty would be our next best option. This spot is only a little bit deeper than the Bolsa Chica Inlet so I switched to the popular FM110 in Metallic Sardine and Peter stayed with the FM130MR. Peter ended up catching 2 small halibut with that lure using a fast and steady retrieval speed. It took me a while longer but I finally caught one also using the same retrieve. Then I switched to another new lure this year being the Flash Pointer 115 in the Ghost Pearl Ayu color. This lure combines some features of both the FM110 and Pointer series lures. It casts very similar to the Flash Minnow 110 and has a much more subtle side to side action. The halibut really liked this lure, at first I had one follow but didn’t bite, next I hooked one but it shook my hook, then finally I got one to stick! I was using a medium retrieve to attract these fish. So I think that the Flash Pointer is the perfect lure when the Flash Minnow and Pointer just aren’t quite working. I will be using this lure much more often now!
